Masks fascinate me because of their transformative and metaphoric qualities. The need to develop an identity in relation to the world is not an easy feat, and a mask can help the wearer to try out different aspects of an identity. I feel that the dramatization of life has been laid into the hands of Hollywood directors too much. Where did real life storytelling, and dressing up, and innocent adventures go? Grown ups wear make-up and pinstriped suits. Those are boring masks.
In 2013 I made a photo series with my own papier mache masks, and in 2014 a series of drawings that were exhibited in the University of Amsterdam.
