Gifted is a series of oil paintings that explores the inherent violent nature of the family bond, especially the parent-child relationship. In current times we are presented with a glowing positive image of motherhood that is only challenged in comedies presenting the complete opposite (bodily functions, calling children “little assholes”). However, in both scenarios the mothers are the heroes. I want to present a more nuanced story, based on the books “The Drama of the Gifted Child” by Alice Miller, and “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. Becoming a parent is not some heroic endeavour, it is a function of ones biology. Suffering is inevitable in any relationship, but especially in a relationship in which one has all the power, and the other none.
